With the season drawing to a close the club knockout competitions are coming to a conclusion thick and fast.
In the club championship semi final the 2015 champion Alex Long took on past champion Tony Graham. Tony was in good form following his recent holiday and at the turn was one up. However Alex is always at his best when his back is against the wall and he produced some stunning golf to overcome Tony and progress to the final.
The final was played over 36 holes on a beautiful sunny day on Saturday between Alex and past champion Sandy Harvie. In a very tense competitive final Sandy held onto Alex for 27 holes, however with fatigue setting in, Sandy floundered and Alex produced the golf that would make him champion for the second year running.
An interesting occurence during the final happened at the 4th hole. Both players had played their tee shots and both lay on the green. As they approached the green a fox appeared and snatched the ball belonging to Alex, took it away and dropped it in the rough. Not happy with one ball the fox then returned to the green and made off with the ball belonging to Sandy. Sandy is still awaiting the return of the ball.
The Gerry Dickenson 4BBB final was played on Sunday with Sandy Harvie & Stuart Jamieson taking on Nevile White & David Aitken. In winning the final Sandy & Stuart produced their golf of the season which Nevile & David had no answer to.
In the Captains Plate semi final Iain McQueen and Stuart Jamieson played for the right to meet Brian Duguid in the final. With Iain on fine form, particularly his chipping and putting, Stuart had no answer for him and was soundly dispatched. Congratulations to Iain in overcoming Stuart who has won this competition for the last three years and has been one of the club’s top players this season.
In the Coronation Cup semi final Ronnie Ritchie played David Aitken for the right to play Alex Long in the final. Both players produced some fine golf in testing conditions, however David eased past Ronnie on the day. The final is to be played in the coming week and should be a very interesting affair.
The ladies 4BBB final between Chris McIntyre partnering Erica Porteous and Elena Rogers partnering Ann McQueen took place on Thursday. This was an exciting game which was only decided in the gathering early evening darkness at the 19th hole. Chris & Erica were the eventual winners.
On Wednesday the ladies played their 9 hole circle competition. The winner was Linda Brown with a brilliant 39.
On Saturday the ladies played their 3 club competition. Playing some imaginative shots with her limited selection of clubs, Erica Porteous scored 29 points to win.
On Sunday the over 50’s played for the Roddy Hermon XV Cup. In good conditions there were some excellent scoring not least from the winner Ian Brown who shot 35 points and just managed to beat Terry Haine over the last seven holes on countback.
On a historical note the oldest past member of the club George Kirkwood died recently just a fortnight short of his 100th birthday. George was a member in the 50’s ( he taught at Dalry school) and is pictured in John Watson’s book of the first 100 hundred years and is fondly remembered by many of the older members of the club.
