A bumper turnout for the third and final competition in our Club Championship qualifiers – the Sanderson Cup.
It’s also rather a nice trophy in its own right.
Eleven golfers defied the gloomy forecast and set out to do battle with
themselves the course.
On a deadline, I scooted out in the first pair with Marena. This is the third time we’ve played together in a week. People will talk. Predictably, neither of us quite recaptured the giddy form of last week. But we had a lovely time and didn’t get too wet when it started to rain (two hours after it was forecast – hurrah!) Marena really got going in the back 9. She came home in 10 fewer strokes than the front 9. Erica also managed to better her outward half by 10 strokes, coming back in the day’s best half (39).
I apologise for the lack of photos – I was too busy concentrating. And also too slow to get a shot of any of the dozens of red kites that flew overhead (‘kites’ the birds, not the toys that inspired Mary Poppins’ boss George Banks) .
As I dashed off before the others returned, I’ll have to appeal for descriptions of the three undoubtedly magnificently heroic 2’s that were scored today. Step forward: Janette and Elena on the 13th and Anne on the 4th. I’m sure they were terrific tee shots/chip ins/long putts. Very well done.
Honourable mention also to our newest member Elizabeth. She took her newly-awarded handicap out for its first competitive spin, carding a respectable score on our ‘challenging’ course 🙂
Overall, we had some lovely scores today and two members achieved a handicap reduction (well done Janette and Erica). But the victory and trophy goes to Elena. She secured victory over Janette on 9 hole countback after both carded impressive 67’s. Erica was one further stroke behind in third place on 68. Very well done ladies.
I’ll post full results and the Club Championship Qualifier Results (gross scores, best 2 out of 3 rounds from Wass Cup, McEwan Cup and Sanderson Cup) in the locker room.
Next week we have the second round of the Harebell Trophy (a stableford competition). See you there!
